What is a Registry or Domain Registry ?

What is a Registry or Domain Registry ?

A domain registry is a listing of all domain names and their IP addresses. Registry is an organization that provides the registration of the domain names. Registry plays the role of conveying the rest world that the domain name registered is now Not Available for further registration. Registry authorizes Registrar to collect the information from the customer who wish to register the domain and pass it to the Domain Registry to register the domain.

Most of the first / top level domains are Free TLD's i.e these TLD's can be registered by anyone from any part of the country. Some Free TLD domains are .com, .net, .org,.info, .biz and etc. If a domain has a description of the country in the TLD then those are know as second level TLD's such as .co.uk, .org.uk, .com.br ..etc.

The TLD's are governed and administered by their Registry . ICANN - Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers governs most of the Top Level Domains. The UK TLD domains are governed by Nominet - The UK Head Registry. Each Registry has their own policy & terms of Domain Registration.

are registered at Registry as they maintain the records of the names and the numeric addresses assigned to name & vice-versa. can be created only through the Registrar where the actual domain name has been registered......
