You are absolutely correct. Most of the affiliate marketeers fails due to heading in a wrong direction. Basically, in affiliate marketing if you want to generate greater revenue, it is highly important to adhere to the rules and follow the do's and dont's.
The first biggest mistake usually people do is getting involved without knowing what the affiliate program are and due to which they generally fail and find themselves in wrong direction.
Never use copied content. This is another mistake affiliate marketeers do, copying content and pasting on their sites as it is. Due to changing Google algorithm, it is highly important to write unique, fresh, information and valuable content that adds some value to search engine and attract visitors and encourage them to spread your content in various channels.

And one of the golden rules - don't attempt to defraud the system. Clicking on your own adverts for the purposes of income generation will likely get you banned. Or at least, you will receive not credit for the fraudulent clicks!.

Indeed, including fraudulent clicks, never make use of any fraudulent tools like spyware and other notorious software's. Using such fraudulent tools increases risk for both affiliates and merchants as it lower the affiliate program and company's reputation and revenues. Also, there are some affiliate websites that will recommend you to use script cloaking techniques to boost your website traffic or conversion rates. Never use such scripts as it will lead you toward getting banned from search engines or account suspension by your merchant partner, if you are caught red hand.

Well said, but there is more to consider when doing affiliate marketing. One should avoid the website's over designing. A common mistake people usually do in affiliate marketing is placing too many banners or links on their website/blog. Placing too much banners looks totally unprofessional, also, may slowdown your page loading speed. Keep the site/blog simple that you are using for affiliate marketing purpose. According to Google, sites having less content "above the fold" on a browser will be affected by the Page Layout Algorithm.
Hence, instead of overdoing your design and placing too much banners, overdo in targeting your site/blog contents. After all, the factor that is going to convince your website visitor is the information you provide to them. Also, join only those affiliate programs that are worth while (credible) to recommend your site audiences.

Re: Do Not Do in Affiliate Marketing
IMHO, The biggest mistake can happened is affiliates over spending in PPC advertising. It's the most costly marketing channel and easily cost thousand of dollars for tiny amount of visitors that are not ready to signup. Even if they are signing up, there is risk of the affiliate company not granting to sales made as VALID and reward the commission.
PPC advertising is simply too costly and can be one of biggest mistake in affiliate marketing.Charles Gan

Re: Do Not Do in Affiliate Marketing
I would say do not over-promise. Do not commit more then what you can actually provide.
It is important that you only promise your customers what you can actually deliver. Otherwise later you would face problems and you clients won't be willing to come back to you.
