    eNlight CPU Charges

    Hi,
It's been a while since I was last on here but my eNlight balance is diminishing, so I thought I'd take a look at the billing information.
To my dismay, it appears that my monthly forecast is now double of what it was, when I started this platform. Further investigation shows that since 12th June (!) the billing charts now display CPU charges that match the allocated CPU. Previously the charge was based on actual CPU usage. Is this a fundamental change that I missed along the way? I do hope that this is incorrect, otherwise I'd be nearly cheaper with a vmware Cloud!
    Regards,
    EJ

    Hi EJ,

I'm referring this to Rishi, one of our eNlight engineers, to look into this for you. He'll get back to you personally.

    Best regards,
    Ben Stones.

(Edit) Just to update you, Rishi is looking into this now. I've just spoken with him.

Thanks. I wonder if it is related to the minimum CPU allocation change, which was around the same time.

        Hi EJ,

It indeed is. Rishi and I just spoke about it and it immediately became clear it was because you had set a minimum CPU allocation. Because you have allocated a minimum amount of CPU resources, you are charged for at least the minimum amount of CPU resources because they are allocated to your VM and so are absolutely guaranteed.

I'm not happy that we do not have a section in our Client Area about this though, to notify customers that they will be charged for the minimum CPU resources they allocate to their VM. I'm e-mailing our sales and development team to sort that out immediately. However, we do make it clear in this forum post in our eNlight Cloud forum that "After you define the minimum allocation, even if your VM usage drops below it, you would still be charged for the minimum guaranteed allocation as this would be reserved allocation for your VM at all times." - but we should have the same in the Client Area.

You are welcome to submit a ticket to our feedback department regarding this, but I cannot guarantee to you that any credit will be awarded as the minimum CPU resources function is working as it should. But I apologise for any misunderstanding.

I'm e-mailing our team to make it clearer in the Client Area regarding this new function that was introduced in June.

        Best regards,
        Ben Stones.

Ahh, here's where the confusion has arisen - I wasn't aware that I had activated the min. CPU option. (In fact, it's a bit of a surprise, as I still get the occasional warning that the email queue size can't be determined.)

Have now set the following (Min. CPU was at 1 - the default?):
          Scale VM: Yes
          Min RAM: 256MB
          Max RAM: 512MB
          Min CPU: 0
          Max CPU: 1

Hopefully this'll return me back to the low cost option - I'll try to remember to check tomorrow - this Cloud is for 'non-earning' sites.

[Not complaining in terms of credit used, 'cos you guys have been good to me.]

Thanks for clearing this up guys.

Just a question - is the default automatically one? I'll have to go and check this out.

I can confirm that newly created VMs have a CPU min. set at zero (good) but can't verify that pre-existing VMs have min. CPU set at this level. I unfortunately only have one active VM at the moment, on eNlight.

[As an aside: UKr3 gives template errors for all but one of the options - the cPanel one. UKr4 is fine as it shows a different set of templates.]

Is this minimum CPU/RAM function available for both Windows and Linux VMs or just Linux-based VMs? I'm considering buying a Windows VPS for a new ASP.NET project I am undertaking, but seeing as eUKhost offer Windows-based eNlight VMs, I might consider eNlight instead.

Firstly glad to know that you are interested in a Windows eNlight VM

We do offer minimum RAM/CPU function for Windows eNlight VM's as well along with the Linux ones. You can select this option while creating the VM within your eNlight Control panel.

Let me know if you have more queries.

                    Hi EJ,

we had discussion about minimum CPU and RAM before 2 months here. I guess you had changed the option from the control panel and left it as it is.

May well have done, in the interest of testing, as I do () but so long ago, that there's no way that I'd remember.

. I can relate to this, sometimes its hard to remember yesterday (and no, before any one says it, not thanks to alcohol!! ).

I checked my pre-existing VMs and can confirm that the default setting on them was 0 which backs up what has been said here .
