  • Error 916 : Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008

The server principal “username” is not able to access the database “databasename” under the current security context. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 916)

This error sometimes occurs when a user using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008 attempts to access a database on a shared server. When Management Studio 2008 gets a request to view databases it will send a query to get information on all databases being stored on the server, even if the user currently logged in to Management Studio does not have permission to access all of them. The error message will pop up if the Management Studio tries to get collation information for a database that the current user does not have permission to view.

Well there is a Fix Hopefully!

    1. After starting Management Studio 2008, select Databases in the Object Explorer once.

    2. If the Object Explorer Details are not already showing, select View from the toolbar then select Object Explorer Details.

    3. Right click on any column header and make sure that “collation” is not checked.

    4. Refresh the database list by clicking the Refresh button located at the top of the Object Explorer Details panel. You should have now have full access to your database at this point.

    Regards,
