    Hi Murry,

    Please confirm below things regarding IIS7 configuration import issue :

    1) Backup is taken using appcmd.exe or powershell.
    2) Are you trying to migrate/restore backup on new server.
    3) Backup contains single domain or multiple domains.

      Re: Import IIS 7 Configuration fails

      Hello euk-Russell,

      Thanks for quick reply, I am trying to move all 19 sites to new server, backup was taken for each domain individually using APPCMD.exe
      Export via command appcmd list site “Mysite” /config /xml > c:\mysite.xml
      import via command appcmd add site /in < c:\mysite.xml

      I am exporting/importing single site each time to reduce downtime, each site has custom setting.

      If you can suggest other powershell option I can try that as well.

      Murry....

        Hi Murry,

        You can use Powershell inbuilt single liner command for backup/restore

        For backup IIS Configuration :
        ====
        PS:> Backup-WebConfiguration 'mybackupname'
        ====

        Running this command creates config backup folder located at C:\windows\System32\inetsrv\backup\mybackupname

        Copy folder 'mybackupname' to same location C:\windows\System32\inetsrv\backup\ on new server and restore.

        For restoring IIS Configuration on new server:
        ====
        PS:> Restore-WebConfiguration 'mybackupname'
        ====

        Backup-WebConfiguration and Restore-WebConfiguration always use backup directory in C:\windows\System32\inetsrv\backup\ , hence no need to mention path while backup/restore process.

          Hello euk-Russell,

          Firing those command in Powershell gives weird error.
          The term 'Backup-WebConfiguration' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file,..........

          I've enabled execution policy, any ideas

            Re: Import IIS 7 Configuration fails

            Hello Murray,

            It seems server you fire command is 2008 NON R2 that doesn't have those inbuilt Powershell commands.
            You must install IIS-Powershell snapin via WebPlatform installer to get PsShell benefits.
            Navigate to IIS PS:\> via desktop icon after installation and then fire those command
            If you need any further assistance with this import/export do let us know.

              Hello Mithil,

              Correct, Installed IIS snapin and successfully backup IIS config, New server being r2 already had those PsShell support. Import work seamless. Thanks everyone!!
