Windows Server 2012 :: Strong Reasons For Upgrade

But why..!!! why should I change the working combination ? I have a Windows 2003/2008 OS which is doing well and it's stable then why should I take the risk and upgrade to a Windows 2012 R2 server ?

All such questions strikes through your mind when someone approaches you with the option to upgrade your existing Windows server to a Windows 2012R2. So let's outline some reason as why you should plan to upgrade to a Windows 2012 R2 server.

    1. EOL For Windows Server 2003/2008

The extended support from Microsoft for Windows Server 2003 is ending on July 14, 2015. The main stream support for Windows server 2008 & 2008 R2 ended on Jan 13. 2015 & the extended support is ending on Jan 14,2020. For further details please refer :: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecyc...Windows+server

So what does it mean ? It means your server is vulnerable & non-compliance. No more security patches will be available for your server.

    2. Rich In features

Windows 2012R2 is rich in features, few of them are RDS ( Remote Desktop service), Work Folder, Web Application Proxy and many more...!!! In brief, you can synchronize folder from file server to your Windows device, remotely wipe the folders from your PC's etc.

    3. Virtualization Redefined

This is where Microsoft has improved a lot, the Hyper-V in Windows 2012R2 is way ahead compared to Hyper-V in Windows Server 200 R2. You can save licensing, power and hardware cost. You can enable Hyper-V, Microsoft’s enterprise virtualization, for free, which is also available as the free Hyper-V Server. When you consider the changes in Hyper-V from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012 R2, the leaps in scalability and functionality are amazing for such a relatively short time period.

Don't forget that Microsoft also offers a free version of Hyper-V Server 2012 R2. The free version is a great choice when running a pure Linux or client operating system workload such as VDI. In addition, the free version doesn't require the Windows Server guest operating system licenses that are part of Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Data center.

    4. Improvements

Fail-over clustering is included in the standard edition. For non-Microsoft platform like PHP, IIS supports great performance & it's also scalable. Bit-locker encryption is supported.

    5. Tiered Storage

Storage Tiering is the ability to dynamically move chunks of stored data between different classes of storage, such as fast SSDs and slower hard drives.Provides greater performance and scalability. The ability to size the SSD and HDD tiers separately is available. It's possible to pin important files to the SSD tier.

Well, these are just a few highlights of the Windows 2012R2 server. The new feature list includes more added feature in Active Directory, DHCP, Certificate Services etc.

Hope, you have a good reasons to upgrade to Windows server 2012R2...!!!!
