    Top-Level Domains

They say that the type of the domain name is of great importance. And if you want to be a success you should have the first level / top-level domains, including com, net and org. Another important purpose of a domain name is to provide easily recognizable and memorizable name. So what about the second-level and third-level domain names?

Top-level domains may be seen a bit better by search engines, but having a top-level domain is hardly the key to success. You can succeed with third-level domains too. The important aspects include other aspects, among which: your site's content and the ways you optimize it for search engines.

You can have a very popular blog on a .info domain. In fact, I know one that has thousands of monthly visitors, because it has great content.

Absolutely, it is not necessary to have a .com , .net or .org domain name to succeed. The success depends on various factors which affects the ranking and online presence of your website on Internet.

Top level domains are represented by the letters following the period. In addition to .com, org, net, biz, etc. would all be top level domains. The second level domain is to the left of the period. That's the main part of your domain name without the "dot com". When you register a domain name, you're choosing both the top level and the second level of your domain.

The way I've seen top level domains explained on the web makes it easy to confuse their meaning. One authoritative site describes them as being at the top of the hierarchy. Tney're talking about the hierarchy of the domain structures and how it's all organized. Nevertheless, it almost makes it sound like a top level domain is a preferred domain.
