    Selling the whole website

How to sell a whole website instead of just the domain name? After your website is sold, how will you technically transfer the ownership of the website and the domain to your buyer?

The domain registrar might have provided you a domain control panel, from there the contact/ownership details can be changed. Since you would be selling off the domain name, you'd be required to push the domain to the new owners account under the registry. Once pushed, you no longer retain the control over the domain.

You may check the detailed information about it here : Change of Registrant Name / Registrant Transfer

    Hope that is helpful.....

So you can actually sell your website after you get it up and running to someone else...How would you go about actually finding a buyer and to find out how much it might be worth? I know some must be worth a lot more then others.

Thanks for the information and the link. What about the website? Does the seller have to manually send the website files and databases to the buyer? Would it make the process easier if both the seller and the buyer used the same hosting company like EUKhost?

There are some websites available on the internet where you can sell your websites. Sites like Ebay and Amazon can be used for this purpose. You only have to register and post details of your website on it and buyers will contact you if they are interested in purchasing the website.

This decision actually depends on the buyer. If the buyer finds the hosting provider good enough for hosting the website, the buyer may ask the seller to keep the website hosted on the same server and will gain access to the hosting plan, however, if the buyer wants to host it on another server, the seller has to provide the files and databases to the buyer.

So, let me get this straight... If the buyer wants to host the website with another company, the seller has to interrupt the current hosting account, thus losing the money that he/she had paid for the hosting services? Or is the buyer the one who has to inform the current hosting company that he has purchased the website?

It is not necessarily the case. You can use the hosting server to host your other websites. Depending on the hosting plan you purchase, I think many hosting providers allow you to host multiple domains and websites on a hosting account.

You are Welcome !! You may wish to send the files contained within the database manually to the buyer OR pass over the FTP and server details to the buyer. If the seller and the buyer has a hosting account with the same host then in that case things may get simple to some extent as you are well aware about the procedures that the host follows.

That's obvious, if the buyer wishes to host it with a different host the current hosting account needs to be cancelled. Depending on the host, the seller may ask for a money back for the remaining amount of unused months (though not all hosts would offer a moneyback).
While if you have decided to take the website to a different host, there is no need to inform the current hosting provider, the account would automatically get suspended after a certain period of time. But before the suspension happens better make sure that you have the backup of your files and database(s).

I think it is the seller who is responsible for that. As a buyer, you would just need to receive files and databases and anything related to the purchased website, and set them up on your hosting server.

At number of instances one might have a hosting package as well as the domain name registered with a particular web hosting provider. In that case you might have to face issues in future, as according to the previous hosting provider, the account would probably have an outstanding amount to be paid inorder to proceed with the renewal of a domain. Until the dues are settled, the host would probably not allow you to renew the domain name.

Personally if I was selling a whole website I would include in the selling price the remaining cost of the contract / payments to the current host. Then you can just give them access to the web hosting account and if they choose to move it to another provider then so be it.

After all you are just selling the website, you're not selling a service on top of that to transfer it to another host .

I second to that. Its quite justifying to hand-over all the accesses, logins and other aspects relevant to a website to the new owner and let them take care of things from there. I further appreciate the point that one can sell the website and include the remaining amount of the contract in the final deal.

I agree with DPS. My father-in-law makes and sells websites on the side to make some money and he does really well with it. He usually makes a couple hundred on each site that he sells. However he usually finds clients who tell him what kind of website they want and then he makes it for them.
