Best Security Measures for Domain Management

    Hi all,

We all know the importance of our domain name...our properties. We also know that there is a lot of scum out there attempting fraudalent activities and attempting to steal them.

My question is for all of you...how do you manage your domains? Do you reset your account passwords weekly? Do you store all of your domains with one registrar or do you have them registered with multiple registrars? Last question is, what do you think of namecheap? I have many cheap domains with them and I like the simple yet effective GUI they have for domain management...is namecheap very secure when it comes to hackers, etc? I'm about to transfer some more expensive domains around and I want some feedback.

    Thanks everyone.

I do not reset my passwords at all. I keep them safe in a secret folder on my PC. I make sure to have a really good Firewall installed on my computer, and so far I have never been hacked. So far, my domains are registered with two registrars, none of which is namecheap.

I'm glad to know that you've been successful with keeping your accounts safe from any fraudulent activities. Yet I'd still advise you to keep changing your passwords on a regular basis, the passwords should ideally be in an alpha numeric format with a combination of upper and lower case characters. Safety over the web is what everyone strives for, hence there is no harm in following certain recommended precautionary techniques of safety.

I think I'm going to take Matt's advice and change my password for accessing my domains. It's alpha-numeric as suggested, but I haven't changed it regularly. To guard against hacking, I guess you need to change it every few months at least. Is that right, or should you change it more often?

Changing it regularly after few months should be fine. Moreover you should have different passwords and usernames for your control panel, database and domains. This would help you with keeping the other accounts safe despite someone managing to catch hold of any one.

I have to admit that I am a bit lazy when it comes to changing passwords. I always try to make long, complicated and hard-to-guess passwords, so that I don't have to change them often.

You better not be, now-a-days hackers are equipped with advanced softwares and tools to determine the password of a particular site, database, even servers etc. such tools run different permutations and combinations to find the appropriate one. The only drawback of such softwares/tools is that it may take long hours or days to determine login details of a targeted website, server etc. hence the need to keep varying the passwords from time-to-time so that even if the tool closes the possibility of guessing the password, you'd have already changed it therefore keeping your site, applications, server, database etc. safe from intrusion.
