What is the Difference between Unlimited and Unmetered?

I have seen many hosting providers offer unlimited bandwidth and hosting and many also offer unmetered bandwidth.

I want to know what exactly is the difference between the two and which one is better?

Unlimited bandwidth is not possible. It is basically a marketing gimmick used by various companies to lure customers.

They usually rely on the assumption that no one actually uses all the available resources and they capitalize on this and offer unlimited plans. The service may not be bad but it might not be actually unlimited. When you check the TOS you will know.

Unmetered on the other hand means that you can utilize the full capacity of the port for the line up and down. The transfer is not monitored. So on a 10 mbit port you can anywhere over 3tb.

There is a huge difference between unlimited hosting and unmetered hosting. Unlimited hosting means you can get an unlimited amount of space and bandwidth. But if your server needs less space and bandwidth than it is not a good choice for you to buy unlimited bandwidth. And unmetered bandwidth means you get to use as much resources as the server can hold. So according to me unmetered bandwidth is the best option for you.

Whether you choose unlimited (which is obviously don’t exist) or unmetered hosting, there is always a limitation because of the hardware on the machine. Hence, both terms are not acceptable.

Big difference!! It means that you can unlimited amount of space and bandwith. But what if the servers reached capacity? There is no server that has no maximum capacities. so it is a misleading marketing term. Unmetered means you get to use as much resources as the server can hold.

Unlimited is just a false promise.. never trust! however Unmetered is possible wherein hosting service provider usually cap or control the 'top line' speed for date transfer from a server.
"Top line speed in Unmetered bandwidth is the total Mbit/sec allocated to a server which is configured at the switch level.
Unmetered bandwidth users have a data transfer rate at a preset controlled speed hence they can't cross the certain limit.

If service provider put a cap or controls the top line speed of data transfer from a server, then what makes sense to call it as unmetered bandwidth? It should be called as metered bandwidth. Irene, if you opt for unmetered bandwidth then you wont be charged extra for overusage nor there would be a preset limit on datatransfer hence it's called unmetered. Hope it's clear now

In simple word with unmetered opiton you get full use of the line up and down but it could be capped to 10/20mbit(pre decided by webhost)Your data transfer won't be monitored in terms of GB or TB per month.

If we take exapmple of 10 MBPS unmetered bandwidth option it would mean that you get a 10 MBPS network port speed without traffic monitoring hence you wont be charged for overusage.

Unlimited is a restriction for some issue whereas on other hand, Unmetered is simply the value which is not measured. The technical difference between this two is that this type of server is connected with network card and these cards are only physically capable of carrying a certain amount of bandwidth because the speed of transfer is limited.
