  • Steps to Starting an Online Business

Starting an online business is much the same as starting any business. You should go to your local town hall and find out what the requirements are to form a business in your area. Also ask what is required at the state and federal level. In most communities you must register a trade name. If you will operate as a Corporation or a Limited Liability Company other registration requirements are required. Also, if you operate from your home you should inquire about the local zoning laws. All these steps are needed for any business.

Your business will likely fall under the category of a mail order business. Learn about the Sales Tax requirements. If you do not have nexus in another state you can sell and ship merchandise to residents of another state without charging Sales Tax. However, sales to residents in your state will require collection of Sales Taxes and remittance to your state’s Sales Tax Department. The Federal Trade Commission passed a rule in 1975 requiring you to ship merchandise within 30 days of receipt of payment. You must abide by the Truth in Advertising requirements which essentially require you not to be misleading in your ads. For example, when giving a guarantee, you must describe in detail how that will be carried out. It all boils down to the fact that you should operate your business honestly, which, by the way, is an essential key to your future success.

If you are going to be buying inventory for your online business from distributors you should:

    * Make sure you are buying from a reputable source.
    * Check references and call the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Affairs divisions in the distributors state concerning complaints.
    * Try to obtain merchandise on consignment, thus conserving your cash.
    * Look into companies that will drop ship on your behalf.

As a reseller you can then offer a larger selection. These techniques can supplement special sales of high mark up items you keep in inventory.

Do a business plan. Look at all the valuable resources of information available to you in not only preparing a plan but also to learn how to market your product and how to operate successfully on the web.

That's some good points you have discussed, I would like to add some more. In e-commerce the most important point is a platform for e-commerce clients, that enables easy buying through an online store. Such as customer area for customers to manage their profiles and products and history, Navigation tools for searching products by name, manufacturer or description etc... One of the most important tool "Tell Me When You Are Available" You might don't know how many of your clients waits to buy a product when its in stock again. Through this tool, customers are able to receive notice about the availability of the products in the stock. There are many such things that needs to take into consideration if you want to start an online store.

When it comes to the best shopping cart, I think Magento gets my vote. Though, it's not entirely free as it has 3 editions out of which 2 are paid ones, however, the features it offers are simply excellent. The best part of Magento I like is the fact that it has got most of the features you need for customers including reward features for them.

I would vote for OpenCart if you are interested in a Free eCommerce shopping cart. Else, Magento , Joomla or Zencart too can be options to be considered, but these require a fair experience to get the most out of it.

The best shopping cart according to me is OScommerce shopping cart. I think the best part of it is the support you will get for it and the other advantage is easy installation from cPanel control panel.

Zencart shopping cart can also be installed with a few simple clicks from cPanel control panel which makes it one of the most preferred shopping cart for small store owners who cannot afford to purchase a high configuration hosting plan but need a shopping cart on the website.

IMO, Zen Cart is the best online store management system. The reason behind is that it is based on PHP and uses MySQL database. It supports various languages and currencies and is absolutely free to download. Unlike, other shopping carts, zen cart can be installed and setup by anyone having basic computer skills.

All e-commerce software that I have heard of do all of those things?? Except maybe free to download. Zen Cart is a cheap solution but miles from the best.

I have been building ecommrce stores for 15 years, used OsCommerce, Agora, Zen, VirtueMart etc. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, which can be better for specific situations and types of stores.

Lots of people now expect much from e-comm software, such as linking in payment systems to stock and order, Sage you name it - everybody expects that if it is on a PC it can be inter-linked.

This is why I have to give my vote to Magento, its ability to adapt to just about anything you can throw at it cannot be rivalled IMHO.

In my opinion it is also important to register an impressive domain name for starting an online business and it is also important to have the email ids that contain the domain name. This will create and ensure your online presence.
