    i think directory backlinks has loosed their Search Engine Optimization importance as they were before as they are not being used as the growth of search engine and the traffic from the directories can be counted with the fingers and most of the directories internal pages are not even indexed by google.

    Backlinks from Directories was never a primary source of backlinks for a website and it were just used to push websites on search engines for some keywords as getting backlinks from directories is a comparatively easy task and positive results were noticed. However, nowadays, it has bee noticed that search engines have reduced the importance of backlinks from directories as they have realized that most of the websites used to get backlinks from directories which never check the content or the relevancy of the website which affected the search results.

      According to Google's Webmaster Central Blog;

      Topical directories still have great value in SEO, If you want to submit your site to a directory, you need to ensure that the directory should be on your topic, moderated and well structured. From the Google's point of view, mass submissions, which are known as a quick method to increase backlinks are mostly useless.

        I'd say that Catherine is partially correct. Backlinks from free directories are of not much use in link building, instead a backlink from a Niche directory can offer some good results. A backlink from an authoritative directory such as the DMOZ directory can be considered truely beneficial for your website.

          You are absolutely right, backlinks from high authority sites increases trust, but a lot of examples are there, that the out of 100 only 1-2 submissions are accepted. So, instead of wasting time behind these directories, I would suggest to go for topical directories as suggested by Google.

            Yes, the success rate is quite low when it comes to submitting sites to directory, except if its a new website.

            Though the word suggests the meaning, but I would be thankful if you can elaborate the term "Topical directories", to get a better understanding.

              Topical directories, I mean to say directories related to your niche, on topic, moderated, and well structured. As per Google's suggestion, the submissions should be done only in the directories related to your topic or directories like Dmoz directories suggested by MattBarthorp, adds much value. However, I don't think that there are many such directories available. So, submissions to the proper categories in general web directories with consistent could show you some good results.

                No its nothing like that..directories provide backlinks but the thing is that they take time for approval.. It should be kept in mind that we should submit our site in the correct category & we should go with high PR directories..

                    Directory submission does not have any importance as such. You should not submit your website in thousands of directories mindlessly because this will not do any good to your website. Rather try to submit your website in niche article directories that are still considered to be important by search engines.

                      Directory submission is a type of SEO off page. Directory submission helps to generate the back-links, traffic and increase the level of the keyword position in search engine. But in the directory submission there is required to select a relevant and accurate category for the submission otherwise it will not helps effectively.
                      Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.
