When first getting your website finished is it a good idea to hire a company to promote your site? As in submitting to search engines, other sites and getting publicity for it, to get it 'out there'. If so, how would you go about picking the right company. Or is this something you can do on your own?

I prefer to just use Word Of Mouth. Get your friends to like it and then have them tell their friends, etc. You just have to make sure it is something that they actually like, and are not just doing you a favor, otherwise it really won't get you anywhere.
