Effect of how often you update

Hi all,

Can how often you update your page make a difference in where its ranked in searches? I mean if you update everyday, and other similar sites not so much, does this help you get higher than them ?

Of course updating your website is very important. Websites that are not updated with great regularity simply don't seem as important to search engines. One of the factors according to which web crawlers analyze websites is how frequently sites are updated and with what kind of content. Also, a frequently updated website brings people back to visit again.

New content is important from a Search Engine Optimisation perspective. If you don't update your website, for the articles (in the example if you owned a blog) that had a good search engine listing will be overthrown by newer content discussing the same thing. So this is one of the reasons why new content is required when possible - especially for blogs.

Updating a blog with new content is pretty obvious, since... well, it's a blog...

But what about online stores...? Let's say, for example, a site that sells perfumes. You can't add new items to the online catalog very often because fragrance houses don't release new perfumes frequently. Sometimes, houses (like Armani and Alexander McQueen) keep the same perfumes for years.

Enough rambling from my part. Long story short, my question is: how do you update an online store that sells products which bring nothing new?
