        Top 4

        FreeBSD 8.1 (BSD Licence)
        FreeBSD is an advanced operating system for x86 compatible (including Pentium® and Athlon™), amd64 compatible (including Opteron™, Athlon™64, and EM64T), ARM, IA-64, PowerPC, PC-98 and UltraSPARC® architectures. It is derived from BSD, the version of UNIX® developed at the University of California, Berkeley. It is developed and maintained by a large team of individuals. Additional platforms are in various stages of development.

        PostgreSQL 9.0 (PostgreSQL Licence)
        PostgreSQL is a powerful, open source object-relational database system. It has more than 15 years of active development and a proven architecture that has earned it a strong reputation for reliability, data integrity, and correctness. It runs on all major operating systems, including Linux, UNIX (AIX, BSD, HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64), and Windows. It is fully ACID compliant, has full support for foreign keys, joins, views, triggers, and stored procedures (in multiple languages). It includes most SQL:2008 data types, including INTEGER, NUMERIC, BOOLEAN, CHAR, VARCHAR, DATE, INTERVAL, and TIMESTAMP. It also supports storage of binary large objects, including pictures, sounds, or video. It has native programming interfaces for C/C++, Java, .Net, Perl, Python, Ruby, Tcl, ODBC, among others, and exceptional documentation.

        Ultimate++ 2791 (BSD Licence)
        U++ is a C++ cross-platform rapid application development framework focused on programmers productivity. It includes a set of libraries (GUI, SQL, etc..), and an integrated development environment.
        Rapid development is achieved by the smart and aggressive use of C++ rather than through fancy code generators. In this respect, U++ competes with popular scripting languages while preserving C/C++ runtime characteristics.
        The U++ integrated development environment, TheIDE, introduces modular concepts to C++ programming. It features BLITZ-build technology to speedup C++ rebuilds up to 4 times, Visual designers for U++ libraries, Topic++ system for documenting code and creating rich text resources for applications (like help and code documentation) and Assist++ - a powerful C++ code analyzer that provides features like code completion, navigation and transformation.
        TheIDE can work with GCC, MinGW and Visual C++ 9.0 as contained in free Windows Vista SDK and contains a full featured debugger. TheIDE can also be used to develop non-U++ applications.

        Lua 5.1.4 (MIT licence)
        Lua is a powerful, fast, lightweight, embeddable scripting language.
        Lua combines simple procedural syntax with powerful data description constructs based on associative arrays and extensible semantics. Lua is dynamically typed, runs by interpreting bytecode for a register-based virtual machine, and has automatic memory management with incremental garbage collection, making it ideal for configuration, scripting, and rapid prototyping

              OpenOffice is no longer supported by Oracle. An alternative that is forked from the OpenOffice project is called LibreOffice, and is now the default included office productivity suite with Ubuntu. It is also available for Windows and Mac OS X.

                Wow! Such a great list of free programs! I could really use some of these. Oh, except for ClamWin, which is probably the worst excuse for an antivirus program (I didn't know they were still developing it; I heard that its virus database contains less than 50% of the most frequent viruses). GIMP is awesome though... :smile:

                  I hate GIMP...it's so complicated to use. Photoshop is difficult but I can't figure out what to do in GIMP to do certain effects for example. I know there's GIMPshop which emulates the Photoshop menu and layout but as far as I last checked it wasn't updated in a long time and it was buggy last time I tried it (crashed a lot).
