That's true. While many free themes are excellent, some of the themes don't even work properly. Though, if you know about web designing and coding, you are still able to fix the themes and customize them to meet your needs.

A lot of times, the less popular ones are there for a reason. They could be just ugly, sure, or they could have an awful layout. You want to make sure to trial and error these things to make sure your lay out isn't going to be screwed up.

I actually try to go with something that is not so popular. I like to be known for my "unique" style. I want to be the "trendsetter".

I agree, a theme becomes popular because it has advantages over the less popular themes. So, I think you can choose a popular theme and customize the theme to make it unique.

It depends more on how you'd like to see your blog. If a theme is more popular, it means it must have a better layout, design and space allocated for the content. You may shortlist couple of themes, try those and decide one that suits best to your blog.

    Choosing a Wordpress theme

When it comes to choosing a Wordpress theme for your blog, do you usually go for the most popular (and downloaded) theme or the less popular one? A theme becomes popular for some reason, but if everybody uses the theme, your blog wouldn't look unique anymore.
