how many sites is a decent startup portfolio?

I think that, for a beginner, five sites should be sufficient. Customers can get the idea about your skills, and you can always ask your customers to allow you to add each new website to your portfolio...

If you are just getting started, the biggest key is to post working links to web sites you have created for clients or that you are successfully using. Generally folks are looking to see if your designs have been purchased and are working to draw people to stay on the site long enough to buy/read/return.

For myself, I tried to have 10 original designs and usually 7 or 8 of them were working links. I had a couple of favorites that I just couldn't stop showcasing, even though the site owners had moved on from the different endeavors.

Any is better than none! just put together a website displaying your work, and add to it as more comes onboard.
