HTML 5 - when will it be standardised?

    Hi,

Just curious as to whether any standards body has announced as to how long it would take until HTML 5 becomes a recommended standard. Considering many browsers support some of the most important new features that are likely to come in HTML 5 when it is standardised, is there a date or year that is being used as a target or an estimate for HTML 5 standardisation?

    Hi Reece,

HTML5 is already released and is being used worldwide. Stable version of HTML5 will be released by the end of 2014.

Well, like HTML 5, CSS 3 isn't a recommended standard yet but on our website we already use CSS 3-specific properties on our website, like CSS 3 gradients because there are plenty of fallbacks for older versions of the major browsers like Firefox and (gasp!) Internet Explorer. For example, the linear-gradient() property wasn't supported until Firefox 16, but from Firefox 3.6 upwards, the -moz-linear-gradient() property was added to provide support for CSS gradient.

See: Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc - a great website that provides compatibility tables showing you the various levels of support for HTML 5, CSS 3, etc. across different browsers and browser versions.
