With the shorter, snappier .uk domain extension having launched on the 10 June 2014, there are certain rules surrounding the availability and registration of .uk domains if a matching .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk is registered on or before 23:59 on the 28 October 2013. When you attempt to register a .uk domain name with us that is reserved for the owner of another matching .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk domain name, our billing system will warn you before you attempt to continue with your order.

Please be advised any .uk domains which are reserved cannot be registered by anyone other than the owner of the matching UK domain name that was awarded the reservation.

In this article, “cut off date” means 23:59 GMT on the 28 October 2013, and “launch date” means 08:00 BST on the 10 June 2014. Please note the reservation period is for five years until 10 June 2019.

Please see the list below detailing in what situations you would be awarded the first right of registration for the matching .uk domain:

For .co.uk domains

  • If you have a .co.uk domain registered before the cut off date and still active, you have the first right to register the matching .uk domain.
  • If you have a .co.uk domain registered after the cut off date and still active, and no equivalent .org.uk or .me.uk was registered before the cut off date, you have the first right to the matching .uk domain.

For .org.uk domains

  • If you have a .org.uk domain registered before the cut off date and still active, and no equivalent .co.uk was registered before the cut off date, you have the first right to register the matching .uk domain.

For .me.uk domains

  • If you have a .me.uk domain registered before the cut off date and still active, and no equivalent .co.uk or .org.uk was registered before the cut off date, you have the first right to register the matching .uk domain.

How can I be absolutely sure if a .uk domain name is subject to reservation?

You can use Nominet’s free ‘rights lookup’ tool on their website to check.

Do I need to pay an additional fee to register a .uk domain that is reserved for me?

No, the reservation service is provided for free by Nominet. You can register your reserved .uk domain with us at the same rates as a .uk domain not under reservation.

I do not want to register my reserved .uk domain. Can I release it from reservation?

We regret this is not possible. The .uk domain in question will remain reserved until 10 June 2019.

I want to let someone else register my reserved .uk domain. How can I do this?

You will need to first register the domain name yourself and then transfer it over to its new owner.
