Using the Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client is simple and needs no additional setup on your local computer.
Follow the steps below to start using the RDC client:
- Launch the Remote Desktop Connection Client App-
Each Windows system comes with a preinstalled Remote Desktop Connection client application. Here are a couple of ways to open it-- Open the Start menu and search for “Remote Desktop Connection.”
- Open the Run box (Windows Key + R) and type “mstsc”.
Both methods will open the Remote Desktop Connection application.
- Enter the Remote Host IP Address or Name-
In the Computer field, enter the IP address or name of the remote host. Depending on your current setup and the location of the machines, follow these guidelines-- Local Area Network (LAN)- If the client and remote host are in the same local network, enter the remote hostname or private IP address.
- VPN- If connected via a VPN, which creates a secure tunnel between the devices, use the private IP address to connect.
- Remote Connection (No VPN) – If the devices are not on the same local network and no VPN is in use, connect using the public IP address over the internet.
Note: If the default listening port for Remote Desktop Connection (port 3389) has changed on the remote host, identify the new port number after the IP address in the format [IP]:[port]. For example 192.168.1.1:3390.
- Enter RDP credentials and connect-
- After connecting, the system prompts you to enter the username and password for the remote user. Enter the credentials and click “OK” to confirm.
- If a security certificate warning appears, click “Yes” to proceed.
- You will then see the desktop of the remote machine. Note that most Windows versions allow only one active user session at a time, so additional connections will either be denied or will disconnect the current session.
- After connecting, the system prompts you to enter the username and password for the remote user. Enter the credentials and click “OK” to confirm.
