How to Enable Apache mod_userdir Access

April 18, 2024 / Servers, Hosting & Email

In this article, you will learn how to enable mod_userdir access. The Apache mod_userdir module allows users to access a website using a URL that includes the user’s username. This module acts as a provisional URL system on many servers, allowing users to see their websites even if DNS settings are not set up or the domain is not yet directed to the server.

It is crucial to recognize that activating the Apache mod_userdir module grants any virtual host the ability to access any website that shares the same IP address, regardless of the hostname.

Let us follow the steps:

  1. Select the “Enable mod_userdir protection” checkbox.
  2. Select the right “Exclude Protection” checkboxes to enable mod_userdir for particular hosts.
Note- When you turn this on; everyone can access stuff using Apache’s mod_userdir. Therefore, it is better to only allow it for DefaultHost.
  3. To limit who can use mod_userdir for these hosts, type the usernames of specific users in the “Additional Users” box.
    1. Resellers can utilise this function to grant their customers access to their respective websites before DNS information propagation.
    2. To input multiple users, simply separate each account name with a space.
  4.  Keep your changes saved.

By following these steps, you can activate Apache mod_userdir access. If you encounter any challenges, do not hesitate to reach out to our support team for assistance.
