How to change file permissions on a Linux Server

September 16, 2024 / cPanel & WHM

This tutorial offers valuable guidance on setting the right permissions to protect your files effectively.

Permissions play a crucial role in securing your data on the World Wide Web. They allow you to control user access based on your preferences and the level of access you wish to provide. To enhance security, you might need to restrict certain files from being written to or edited. One of the simplest ways to assign permissions is through cPanel’s File Manager.

The below steps must be followed to make the changes:

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Go to “File Manager” in cPanel.
    files>file manager
  3. Select the file to which you intend to assign permissions.
    change permissions
  4. Click the ‘Change Permissions’ link.
  5. Select the appropriate permissions.
  6. Hit the Change Permissions button.
